Severs Disease

Introduction

Sever’s Disease is a Calcaneal (heel bone) Apophysitis.  An apophysis is a cartilage growth center that is the origin/insertion of a muscle's tendon, in this case the Achilles.  In the growing child, the apophysis is a relative "weak link" during excessive muscle contracture.  Excessive sports and activities may cause a pain syndrome at these sites referred to as an Apophysitis.  Sever's may cause heel pain with running and jumping, or more seriously, with simple walking.
