Regenerative Medicine


Regenerative medicine is an exciting new area of medicine with the potential to fully heal damaged tissues such as muscle, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. It offers solutions and hope to individuals, athletes and non-athletes alike, who have conditions limiting athletic performance or normal daily activities.

The use of regenerative therapies to promote healing, such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or concentrated Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (BMAC or MSC’s), have been studied since the 1970s in both the veterinary and human literature. There has been a significant interest in use of these biologic cell-based therapies to treat an expanding number of musculoskeletal or orthopedic injuries.

The role of regenerative biologic therapies such as PRP in sports medicine and orthopedics may signal the dawn of a new era in which athletic and musculoskeletal injuries are treated with cell lines, growth factors, bioactive proteins and stem cells.

The use of regenerative cell based therapies like PRP, BMAC or Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC’s) have been very useful in treating a variety of injuries and conditions in professional, collegiate, high school, and recreational athletes, non-athletes, musicians and performing artists.

Regenerative medicine treatments with PRP or PRP plus BMAC have become an excepted first line therapy for baseball players that have injured their elbow ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) by throwing. These injuries typically require a UCL reconstruction known as a Tommy John Surgery, followed by an average 14 to 18 month rehabilitation program before returning to play. Throwing athletes can now undergo an office based regenerative cell based procedure followed by only a 12 to 14 week recovery period.
