Osteomyelitis

Introduction

Osteomyelitis refers to a bacterial infection of a bone that children can develop spontaneously from a hematogenous (or blood borne) source.  Osteomyelitis usually develops adjacent to a growth plate.  It is serious and frequently requires surgery to eliminate the infection followed by weeks of antibiotics to completely eradicate the infection.  Radiographic surveillance of the growth plate is necessary to ensure continued appropriate development.
