Dr. DeGiorgio on Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a practice that has been utilized for centuries. It involves the insertion of extremely thin needles through your skin at strategic points in your body (also known as trigger points or acupoints).  It is commonly used for pain management and is considered safe when done by an appropriately trained practitioner.

“Acupuncture is a powerful tool utilized by some of the greatest professional and Olympic athletes in the world today,” says Dr. DeGiorgio. “It has been shown to provide an extra boost in performance and quicker recovery from injury and can support the immune system. Imagine being able to offer an athlete all these things safely.  As a physician, acupuncturist and former Division 1 athlete, I don’t understand why it’s not utilized more often. “

While physical training is the most effective way to enhance athletic performance, acupuncture is a highly recommended additional approach for athletes. Dr. DeGiorgio further suggests that, “There is no one size fits all treatment protocol or response, but with proper evaluation the acupuncturist can tailor each session to the athlete’s individual needs. Bottom line: This boutique-style adjunct treatment may benefit the athlete both on and off the field.”
